Are Bearded Men Better Boyfriends?
Men with beards make better boyfriends.
If you’re with a man who has a beard. Congratulations! The long-term future looks bright.
If you’re not, you might want to go out and find one. Or at least encourage the man you're with to grow a beard.
If you are a bearded man. Respect, brother.
We’re not just saying this because we’d prefer every man to have a beard. In fact, we’re not saying it at all, science is. Well, science and societal conditioning.
Beards = long-term relationship goodness
So how on earth does hair on the face suddenly transform a man into prime boyfriend material?
Because, according to science, facial hair indicates testosterone, which equals maturity, which equals the kind of dude you’d want to settle down with.
The science comes from a study published in the Journal of Evolutionary Biology entitled “The masculinity paradox: facial masculinity and beardedness interact to determine women's ratings of men's facial attractiveness.”
The man we have to thank for it is psychologist and pogonologist (the actual word for a man that studies or writes about beards), Barnaby Dixson — a chap who, of course, has a fine beard of his own.
Barnaby and his team of researchers asked 8,250 women, aged between 18 and 100, to rate men with and without facial hair on their physical attractiveness and on a spectrum of ‘relationship longevity’.
And you know what? All of them showed a preference for facial hair. Every single one of the 8,250 women.
It literally doesn’t get any more conclusive than that.
“Our findings suggest that beardedness may be attractive when judging long-term relationships as a signal of intrasexual formidability and the potential to provide direct benefits to females,” says the study.
“Bearded men are rated as older, more masculine, more socially dominant and aggressive looking than clean-shaven men.”
To which we say, “Amen.”
A bearded man is the ideal combination of masculinity and femininity that makes a perfect partner. Too much either way and women are turned off.
No beard = short-term fling, at best
Women that participated in the study found beardless men to be unreliable suitors.
That’s because a beard transforms the face into one that says “I’m strong and I’m here to love and protect you.” Without it, men with clean-shaven, strong jaws are seen as a short-term option, more suited to a bit of a frolick or a casual relationship.
So that’s that then.
A man with a beard is a boyfriend for now and a husband for life.
A man without a beard is a one-nighter who’ll treat you like a queen until the taxi arrives, then he’ll stop replying to your messages.
